What does Mallings Orange and Sichuan Gin taste like?

This elegantly crafted gin, winner of two medals at the prestigious Paris 2025 Competition, is a testament to balance and refreshing complexity, making it perfect for a summer aperitif.

Nose: The aroma immediately captivates with a bright and harmonious blend. On the nose, a hint of freshly picked orange zest, reminiscent of sun-ripened fruit, is enhanced by a subtle touch of lemon zest. Beneath this citrusy freshness, the classic, resinous notes of hand-picked wild juniper berries bring a woody, earthy freshness. Upon opening, a delicate, almost floral scent of Sichuan pepper emerges, promising an intriguing aromatic spice rather than aggressive heat. A hint of coriander adds a gentle, spicy depth.

On the palate: The first sip is remarkably smooth and refreshing, living up to its promise. The palate is greeted by a delightful burst of juicy orange zest, which quickly intertwines with the unique character of Sichuan pepper. The latter is not a fiery spice, but rather a sophisticated, aromatic tingle that dances lightly on the tongue, creating a dynamic and invigorating sensation. Juniper provides a clean, classic foundation, allowing the citrus and pepper to shine without overpowering. Coriander subtly rounds out the mid-palate, adding gentle warmth and subtle complexity. The gin’s award-winning balance is evident here—no single botanical dominates, yet all are in perfect harmony.

The finish: The finish is long, exceptionally smooth, and invigorating. The citrus notes of orange and lemon gently fade, giving way to the characteristic, lingering tingle of Sichuan pepper, which remains clean and fresh. Wild juniper maintains its presence, ensuring a classic and satisfying finish. This gin leaves a remarkably clean and refreshing sensation, inviting another sip.

Overall impression:

Mallings Orange & Sichuan Pepper Gin is a masterful demonstration of modern gin-making, showcasing the beauty of local botanicals and meticulous craftsmanship. It is exceptionally well-balanced, remarkably smooth, and wonderfully refreshing, making it an ideal choice for a summer aperitif. Served simply with tonic and plenty of ice, it offers a sophisticated and delicious tasting experience that fully justifies its two silver medals from Paris.

How to Serve an Orange and Sichuan Mallings

Ingredients:

  • Double serving (50 ml) of Mallings Orange and Sichuan

  • Tonic

  • Plenty of ice (large ice cubes are best)

  • Large gin glass (60-ml Copa/Balloon glass recommended)

Instructions:

  1. Fill a large gin glass halfway with ice. Don’t hold back—the more ice, the better the chill and the easier it is to control how much the drink dilutes.

  2. Pour 50 ml (a double shot) of Mallings Orange and Sichuan Gin over ice.

  3. Slowly top it off with tonic water until you achieve a 50:50 ratio of tonic to gin—this keeps the flavor balanced and allows the orange to shine through.

  4. Garnish if you like (Mallings Orange and Sichuan pairs perfectly with a slice of orange), but it’s just as good on its own.

  5. Serve immediately. Savor it slowly and relax.
